Biosecurity measures in bovines
The legal framework regarding the epidemiologic surveillance system in bovines is laid down in the Royal Decree of 28 February 1999.
The system consists of an obligation for every keeper of bovine animals:
- To contract an approved veterinarian (‘farm veterinarian’) and a substitute veterinarian;
- To call for the farm veterinarian every time a bovine animal is added to the herd. The farm veterinarian carries out the sampling in the framework of the purchase protocol and verifies the identification of the animal(s);
- To notify each (suspicion of an) outbreak of a notifiable disease to the veterinary authority, via the farm veterinarian.
Biosecurity measures in pigs
The legal framework regarding the epidemiologic surveillance system in pigs is laid down in the Royal Decree of 15 February 1995.
The system consists of an obligation for every keeper of porcine animals:
- To contract an approved veterinarian (‘farm veterinarian’) and a substitute veterinarian;
- To have a health visit carried out 3 times a year by the farm veterinarian with a health check, an identification check and a count of the animals during each visit. The farm veterinarian registers an official report of every visit in the official Sanitel database;
- To notify each (suspicion of an) outbreak of a notifiable disease to the veterinary authority, via the farm veterinarian.
Biosecurity measures in poultry
The legal framework regarding the epidemiologic surveillance system in poultry is laid down in the Royal Decree of 17 June 2013.
The system consists of an obligation for every keeper of a poultry holding:
- To contract an approved veterinarian (‘farm veterinarian’);
- To notify each (suspicion of an) outbreak of a notifiable disease to the veterinary authority, via the farm veterinarian.
