Traces

In order to safely manage the import of live animals, live animal products and products of animal origin, food, feed and plants, the European Union has created Traces (Trade Control and Expert System) (Decision 2004/292).

At this moment the system is used as a management tool for the controls carried out for live animals and goods of animal origin (veterinary controls): https://ec.europa.eu/food/animals/vet-border-control_en and for the increased controls for food and feed of plant origin: https://ec.europa.eu/food/safety/official_controls/legislation/imports/non-animal_en

Each Member State is free to also use the Traces system for the other imported goods.

In Belgium controls of food contact materials and controls in the framework of emergency measures are also managed via Traces. In the near future this will also be extended to phytosanitary controls of plants and plant materials.

You can find detailed information about the Traces system on the website of DG Health and Food Safety.
