European Legislation on the water used in food processing companies

Directive 2020/2184 of 16 December 2020 on the quality of water intended for human consumption (recast).

Its objective is to protect human health from the adverse effects of any contamination of water intended for human consumption, by ensuring that it is wholesome and clean.

Directive 2009/54/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of the 18 June 2009 on the exploitation and marketing of natural mineral waters.

Council Directive 2013/51/Euratom of 22 October 2013 laying down requirements for the protection of the health of the general public with regard to radioactive substances in water intended for human consumption.

Belgian legislation pertaining to the water used in food processing companies

  • Law of 14 August 1933 on the protection of drinking water
  • Royal Decree of 6 May 1936 on the preparation of drinking water
  • Royal Decree of 7 May 1936 on the sale of drinking water
  • Royal Decree of 14 January 2002 on the quality of water intended for human consumption which is packaged or which is used in food processing establishments in the manufacture and/or commercial preparation of food products (transposition into national law of Directive 98/83/EC). This decree lays down the regulatory requirements and obligations of operators with regards to the quality and control of water which is used in food processing establishments in the manufacture and/or commercial preparation of food products
  • Royal Decree of 8 February 1999 on natural mineral water and spring water (transposition into national law of Directive 2009/54/EC)
  • Royal Decree of 31 May 2016 on the protection of public health with regards to radioactive substances in water intended for human consumption
