Compulsory Notification

Any operator shall promptly inform the Agency when he is of the opinion or has reason to believe that a product he has imported, produced, reared, grown, processed, manufactured or distributed may be injurious to the health of humans, animals or plants.

The EU has one of the highest food safety standards in the world – largely thanks to the solid set of EU legislation in place, which ensures that food is safe for consumers. A key tool to ensure the cross-border flow of information to swiftly react when risks to public health are detected in the food chain is RASFF – the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed.  More information on the RASFF system you can find on the EU website http://ec.europa.eu/food/safety/rasff_en

Rasff Video

This video, produced by the European Commission, provides information on the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed, a system that warns EU Member States about food-safety risks. In addition to providing concrete examples such as melamine poisoning and problems caused by Chinese soya, this report describes how the system actually works.
