Poultry

The legal framework regarding the identification and registration of poultry is laid down in the Royal Decree of 21 July 2018 on the identification and registration of poultry, rabbits and certain backyard poultry.

The I&R obligations for poultry consist of:

  • Holding registration in SANITEL:
    • All holdings with poultry active in the food chain;
    • Backyard holdings with more than 199 pieces of poultry;
    • Backyard holdings participating in assembly operations.
  • Herd identification: production characteristics:
    • Category of kept poultry: breeding poultry, production poultry;
    • Type of production: breeding, fattening, consumption eggs, hatching eggs;
    • Herd capacity per category.
  • Record keeping at farm in an inventory for 5 years, per group (flock):
    • Of all animals being introduced in the holding;
    • Of all animals leaving the holding;
    • Number of illness and/or deaths;
    • Characteristics on production: food and water consumption, performance (growth, egg production), …
  • Movement records by ‘movement document’:
    • For each transport between holdings:
      • Holding to holding;
      • Holding to slaughterhouse.
    • Made up by transporter and registered into the SANITEL database:
      • Via a paper way system and sending copy to the animal health services for input in SANITEL;
      • By Internet system: registration done by the transporter himself.
